Upon meeting Steve, one would be hard pressed and probably a bit surprised to learn that he is a practitioner of Wing Chun, the very direct and effective form of Chinese Kung Fu. “The sawed off shotgun of martial arts” as Steve likes to call it. Or that he has a collection of electric guitars – the Jackson is his favorite – that he plugs in to a pair of classic 4×12 Marshall cabinets to jam with his favorite hair bands such as Rush, Van Halen and Judas Priest. There is a lot going on with Steve behind the somewhat stoic, all business first impression he projects.
A nationally recognized leader in the retirement plans space, Steven was named to the “Top 100 Retirement Plan Advisers” by PLANADVISER in 2018. In 2017 he was one of only five finalists for the 2013 PLANSPONSOR Retirement Plan Advisor of the Year Award and was among the nation’s “Top 100 Retirement Plan Advisers” for 2018 by PLANADVISER magazine, a position he has held for several years along with “Top 50 Defined Contribution Advisors” for 2012 by 401k Wire. He frequently serves as a speaker at defined contribution professional conferences around the country on numerous topics related to retirement plans and investments.
Beginning his career as a municipal bond trader with Paine Webber, he moved to Nashville in 1995 and several years later joined Morgan Stanley. From 2004 to 2008 he was with Wachovia Securities before joining Avondale in 2009.
Steven received his bachelor’s degree in finance from Auburn University and his MBA from the Crummer School of Business at Rollins College. Then he earned a number of professional designations including his CFA, CIMA, AIF and PRP. He resides in Franklin, TN with his wife and two children.
