2017 Tennessee Healthcare Hall of Fame Inductee Joel Gordon
Avondale Partners is honored to have nominated healthcare legend Joel Gordon for the Tennessee Healthcare Hall of Fame. Gordon was selected as an inductee to the 2017 class, a program created by Belmont University and The McWhorter Society and supported by the Nashville Health Care Council.
The organization seeks to recognize and honor the pioneers and leaders who have formed Tennessee’s health and health care community and also to encourage and inspire future generations of healthcare professionals.
Mr. Gordon — a disruptor of his day — was the first to introduce the concept of physician ownership/joint ventures as a business structure for developing hospitals and long-term care facilities through his work with General Care, which was acquired by HCA. He also was the first to recognize the great opportunity for growth in outpatient surgery centers and founded Surgical Care Affiliates, acquired by HealthSouth, which grew to be one of the largest in the country.
He is known for his work ethic, humble spirit, relentless commitment to family and friends, insatiable curiosity, endless learning, mentoring next-generation health care leaders and an internal compass to always do the right thing.
